Default Ap2 Valve retainer upgrade

Hi I'm looking to upgrade my Ap1 valve train to oem ap2 before I get tuned with my turbo kit. Keep hearing that it's not a good idea to use ap2 retainers on exhaust side but is that proven true? Or can you get away with using ap2 retainers on the exhaust side and the intake side? Thank you

You can use the AP2 exhaust retainers if you want, but it is of no benefit because the exhaust side AP1 retainers are not problematic.

The only ones that need replacing are the intake side. Exhaust retainer issues are few and far between, more important would be the banjo bolt upgrade to assure the#4 cylinder in your F20C is well fed with lubricant.

P.S. Just fired up my car an hour ago after replacing the retainers on my AP1 with AP2 retainers and cotters. all went well. Good luck on your endeavor!

I just upgraded mine. From my reaserch, the intake retainers develop cracks easier in mechanical over rev situations. The exhaust retainers rarely crack. If you never over rev ( exceed 10,000 rpm due to a missed shift) you really don't need to upgrade. I upgraded for piece of mind.

I've still seen some exhaust retainers break so I was thinking just replacing mine while I'm at it just in case. So my question is, is there anyone out there that used ap2 retainers on the exhaust side of a ap1 with success? Thanks

I just ordered ap2 retainers and keepers for intake and exhaust. I searched and read a bunch...

My thinking is if the 04+ f20c's come with ap2 retainers on the intake and exhaust then that's the way I'm going to do it.

Getting ready to do the intake side on mine. Leaving exhaust side alone.

I'm no Billman, but my understanding is that if the exhaust retainers are damaged, then something very bad has happened.

I'm pretty sure the F20's in AP2s (UK cars) stayed the same internally.

This post is exactly why you want to stick with AP1 retainers on the exhaust side:
