while I was under the car doing a differential fluid change, I noticed that the axle had backed it self out of the differential. So I took the axle out and took tout that axle shaft. I cleaned it up and freed up that locking ring. I put everything back but the shaft doesn't seem to stay locked in place, with a little wiggling I can pull it back out. I put back everything back and started the car and put it first gear and watched at the axle was rotating and after a while I could see that the axle shaft started separating again from the differential. What could be the problem here?

UPDATE: it looks like that locking ring was a little chewed up and so I removed it. Maybe if I install new one, that might help?
Also when I'm titghening the axle nut, the axle seems to get pulled towards the wheel and kinda gets stretched. Also how would I install the new locking clip without stretching it too much? thanks

 

The clip will slip on pretty easy. The dust shield on the stub axle should be straightened out as well.

I got the new clip and it seems to have a bigger gap than the old clip. It kind of fits loosely around the axle shaft. Is that normal or should I try to close the gap a little with pliers?

 

No, your good to go...when you insert it, it will compress as it should.
