I don't know about in one gear but on the racetrack I've had the car in VTEC for up to 30 minutes straight. I shift from 2-4 constantly but never drop below VTEC. The engine doesn't seem to mind

While I can't say for sure that it is bad for the motor, I do have to wonder about a few things. For one, If you are talking about second gear, I have to wonder if you are getting enough airflow over the radiator for such high revs, but relatively low road speed. I know that 3rd gear tops out at 90mph, but I'm not sure about second. Probably pretty fast (Maybe 65-70 mph), but from 6,000 rpms, probably a good bit less. I also would think that there would be a fair amount of driveline "lash" if you are doing anything but driving at a constant speed. Even minor throttle changes would be very "thrashy" to me. There are the obvious wear factors associated with high piston speeds etc, but beyond that, what do I know?

Best regards,
Matt

I'm with Strike.. at the track I only drop out of VTEC if I screw up real bad, otherwise it is 6K-9K for thirty minutes at a time. It does not damage the engine, but you can be sure the wear is much higher than the miles would indicate.
