Default What gear down shift at 59mph?

The highest speed I have ever down shifted to 2nd gear in my S is 45mph. great coz it puts me right at 6000rpm the beginning of Vtec.

I never tried down shifting to 2nd at higher speed. The S's Second gear maxes out around 65-67mph.

At around 59 mph in 2nd gear engine RPM is roughly 7700RPM . only 1200 left in the vtec. but more torque and horsepower.

At around 59 mph in 3rd gear engine RPM is roughly 5600-5700 RPM. Out of VTEC range. but no time lost with an extra 2nd-3rd shift.

I would have it in 3rd, I think you would lose more time shifting (this also depends on what gear your already in) then the added benefit of vtec for .3 seconds

Thats the worst spot possible, at least for me. Right udner vtec, where my car seems to dip in power before the transition and the big shove (blower). I havent adjusted the vtec engagement yet.

Id go with third. You'd have to shift almost immediately out of second if you went that low.

I ran an evo a while ago, and we went at it a few times. I was experimenting with launching the car at a slow roll. I found that downshifting to first at 35-ish was NOT the way to go.....he left it in second, and pulled steadily away while my car pitched violently forward for 0.003 seconds before I had to shift. Starting in second produced better results....he still jumped out, but I could reel him in quicker.

Well, the car and transmission was warmed completely, and naturally I matched revs. It went in with no problem at all.

I see...

I guess, when i was learning some one told me never to shift to first unless you are at a full stop...2nd is good if you are moving a little. They said it was bad for the car.

But that was a long time ago with a different car. I never followed that rule completely now i would shift when im going really slow.

So does this mean the autocross guys shift to 1st gear all the time out of a slow corner?

i've downshifted into first a few times going into slower corners. If you watch Jason Sanis vid from nats he does going into one of the slower corners. The vid can be found here http://www.gofastvideo.com/autocross

I downshift to second at 65+ at turn 5 at Laguna Seca. It seamed to help with the pull up the hill. I'm not sure it was overall faster, but it was more fun than staying in third.
