Default Big "Cracking" Noise from Rear at Cold Start

I have a MY2002 with about 11000 miles (none stock, mostly long drive to work/home, no racing, few VTECs now and then) on I've noticed the following:

1. When trying to drive out of my garage, first thing in the morning AFTER proper engine warm-up, the car wouldn't transmit any power (both forward and backwards).

2. Then, as I slowly increase rpm I hear a big "cracking" noise from the rear area.

3. The noise sound like as if a coat of ice is formed around the rotating parts at the rear (perhaps around the rear differential) and the ice breaks as I try to move my car.

4. After the noise, the car finally moves. And everything else is normal for the rest of the day.

My questions are:

1. Any one had a problem like this?

2. Could this be the infamous Rear Differential problem?

3. Or is it "normal" for a RWD car?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

This happens to my car every once in awhile. It has been discussed on the forum
before and it is normal. I can't remember if it was differential related or the brakes.

It's the rear brake pads breaking loose from the rotor, after they've 'welded' or 'rusted' on. If you don't use the parking brake, you won't hear that sound anymore.

This also happens to the rear brakes after you wash your car and immediately park it. The water forms a rust bond between the break pad and the rotor. This is also perfectly normal.

I always park in my garage with the park brake on EXCEPT after I've washed it. Then it's only a small thump when I back out. Sometimes, it doesn't even make a noise at all.

So that's what causes that noise. sounds pretty bad. Glad I found out why.

Thanks, ppl! This explains it all.

I do tend to wash my car rather obsessively. Friends make bad jokes about it...if you know what I mean...hehe. Hey, but can you really blame me !
