Default Bleeding the ABS unit

I think I have been goofing all along here. When I bleed my brakes, I generally drive just before and activate ABS, then bleed them and I had assumed that most of the fluid from the ABS reservoir would mix with the rest of it and then go about the bleeding.

I have been thinking about this process and I think it's flawed. The other day (being the eagle-eyed observant type that I am ... ), I saw the ABS reservoir and the fluid in there was like Coca Cola.

So, what IS the process? Help is appreciated! I don't think I have been going about it properly...

I actually have do not know the answer, but, with my jetta, you had to use the service computer tool to cycle the ABS pump during bleeding inorder to clear it. I imagine the Helms manual has something to say about it. Anyone, anyone, beuller....

what we've done around here a buncha times is bleed, drive around and activate abs a few times, then bleed again. if you want to flush your abs system i think you need some kinda fancy pump doohickey.

I've never seen an ABS reservoir either. I've checked pretty thoroughly in the Helm manual and have never found any suggestion on how to bleed the ABS system.

My mechanic friend tell me not to worry about it. His reasoning is when you boil fluid you do so in the caliper, not the ABS system. He doesn't think the air bubbles will make it to the ABS system.

Oh, hmmm....

Maybe that IS the clutch. I assumed it was the ABS "resevoir" since it is positioned so close to the master cylinder. I, wrongly, thought there was a separate tank for the ABS. Pardon my fox paw...

Carry on!

Bleed that clutch and I think you will feel smoother clutch pedal action. I did.

Some Honda's (Prelude, S2k at least) don't have a special procedure for the ABS pump- do a traditional bleed. I've never had trouble, at least, no trouble I couldn't attribute to poor bleeding in the first place (letting air in the system).
