Default Blue smoke upon takeoff at redlight

Just curious if anyone else has had a puff of oil smoke exit the exhaust when stopped and slightly revving to take off? I've only seen it happen 2 times, and I can rev it to 9k with no smoke at all other than a black puff shifting at 9k., I'm thinking it's the AP1 PCV system causing it. Will upgrading to an AP2 (04-05) valve cover resolve this? Thanks for any feedback.

Same issue I'm dealing with. Interested to know what could be causing this.

Try installing a brand new PCV Valve first. They're only $8 at autozone (if memory serves me right). That way you can at least rule out the valve.

Well, I've officially ruled out oil control rings due to the fact that my car doesn't use a questionable amount of oil or smoke at all when maintaining a 9k rev for long periods of time (I held revs right at the limiter for oveur 3 min and no smoke at all, even on engine decel/next rev). I've ruled out valve guides/seals due to no smoke at startup or on loaded decel. I've chalked it up to the small oil catch can I had placed between the PCV and intake manifold. It is tiny (only holds a few oz) and I believe the oil/fumes were able to pass right through since I placed it in the short line from the PCV to the intake manifold (the catch can I speak of is a filtered Kobalt Air/Oil separator for an air compressor, purchased at Lowes). I bought a large one today (14oz) and relocated it to the driver's side of the airbox, and am now using about 4 ft total of high-temp hose to connect it on each side, which should eliminate any blow through. I haven't been able to duplicate it since the last time it happened. I'm hoping it's resolved, and I'll update in a week or so, after some hard mountain runs on hot days. I would like to eliminate the valve cover breather line that connects to the TB inlet tube just before the TB, so that the VC is not connected to the intake mani at all. Would it hurt to add a T fitting to the catch can inlet line and feed it in there? Or should I just cap off the intake side barb and add a breather filter to the VC? I think that method would be a bit messy venting under the hood. 1st idea sound safe?

Oh, and my engine just turned over 117K miles. I'm the 2nd owner of the car, and the 1st owner hardly ran the car hard at all, as it was driven 95% on the highway to and from the office. The car is immaculate and was 100% unmolested prior to my mods (custom intake and exhaust).

Hmm..I noticed the same thing with my car a couple days ago. It is at 104K and unmolested. I replaced the PCV, and have put a few miles on it since. I did notice today, however, that when I return to idle, I get some "whisping" smoke out of the tail pipe that dissipates after a few seconds. I'm not too concerned about it, but this is a good thread.

I have ben having the same problem... Is the inside of your intake wet (oil residue)?????? I cleaned out the intake as best as I could with some carb cleaner and a rag also replaced the pcv valve with one I had in the garage. (b16 pcv) It worked great no smoke at all for about 2 weeks... Then i noticed it came back. I am using honda 5w-30 engine oil, I going back to 10w-30 and buying a new pcv valve and see what happens. Its definitely a head scratcher.

noticed this as well a 2 times. Quite a noticeable amount of smoke when taking off. The weird thing is that it happened after letting the car idle until 3 bars. Upon inspection of the pcv valve, it seemed the valve was a little sticky.
