Default BRAKE light is stuck On...

I searched, but there never seemed to be a solution...

Right around the time I needed new front brake pads, my BRAKE light came on in the cluster... I thought it would go out when I changed my pads... but it didn't...

The brake fluid is at the proper level, btw...

Anybody ever have this problem? How did you fix it?

Thanks,
Matt

Take the cap for the brake fluid off and make sure the float for the switch is not stuck.

I took the cap off, and there was some sort of plastic sieve that had to come out to get to the fluid...

Where is the floater?

Should I be able to see it?

You have to pop off the screen to get to the float. You can do a test first, by unplugging the electrical connector on the side of the reservoir. If the light on the dash goes out, then you know you have a problem with the switch -- most likely a stuck float. If it stays on, then your problem is elsewhere.

The only way to replace the switch in the master cylinder reservoir is to replace the master cylinder, the switch is not available seperately.

A friend of mine had this problem and it was due to a float that did not float. Since he didn't want to spend the money on a new master cylinder, he just put a piece of tape over the light. Of course, that means that you won't have a warning light if you have the parking brake lever up, or if the fluid level is low in the reservoir.

Unplugging the switch on the master cylinder will do the same, without any tape.

I know this is an old thread - but how did you pop off the float?
My brake light went off when I unplugged the sensor. But getting that float out seems very difficult.

You just take a flathead screwdriver and pry the float up.

Check your handbrake sensor switch as well. You can check it, by trying to use the soft top while the handbrake is down and the car is stopped. Perhaps it gives you a wrong indication.
