Default Brake/Rotor/Caliper Issue

Yesterday a friend noticed that my left rear rotor had a mark all the way around the rotor. It appears to be a scrape of some sorts and is a perfect circle around the rotor and is coming from where the caliper is located.

The caliper looks as if it's too close to the rotor and may be scraping it as it turns.

I'm taking it into Honda to have it fixed tomorrow, but they said they have never heard of something like this happening.

Compared to my friend's S2K, my caliper does appear much closer (almost touching) the rotor. All the others are fine.

I'm not sure if something (rock, debris) is stuck in it, or if the pad is not on right, or if it's a caliper problem.

Has anyone ever seen or heard of this happening?

the caliper is pretty close on mine too, i think its either a rock or something in the pad itself that was hard and made a groove in your rotor, either way honda should fix it under warantee.

This is what is generally called a scored rotor. It happens when a minute piece of grit or other hard object gets lodged in the pad. However, make sure that there isn't something weird about the proximity of the caliper to the rotor.
Only way to fix it is to turn the rotor and get new pads.

I brought it in this morning. They said it looks like a rock or something got caught in the caliper. They will take a look at it and get back to me.

He said that normally, it will get in, get chewed up and fall back out, but it will leave that "ring" around the rotor. I asked if the rotor would need to be resurfaced, and he said, functionally, it won't affect the rotor/brakes, but many people have them resurfaced for asthetic reasons.

So we'll see if it was indeed a rock, or if something happen with the caliper or pad.

It probably happened during our high speed back road shortcut on the way home Sunday. We had a group of us coming back from the beach (no, my car wasn't on or near the sand), and we took a nice back road into town with some sweet straight-aways and high-speed corners.

Fixed under warranty!

It appears as though a rock or other debris got caught in the caliper and caused the scoring.

They turned and resurfaced the rotor for me. No damage to the pads or rotor.
