broken cat bolt

Default broken cat bolt

i was taking off my 2000 exhaust system and i broke one of the three cat bolts/studs? and i tried to beat it out but it would not budge if anyone can hel i would really appreciate it thanks

Often, if you heat the flange with a MAPP torch (propane is not as hot, acetylene is better if you have it) the expansion of the metal will allow you to hammer the bolt/stud out. Just be careful where the hot bolt lands... ;-)

I'm talking about a MAPP torch that you can buy at Home Depot or Lowe's. You'll find many uses for one over the coming years...

it will likely leak with just two studs.

if i were you i would put it back together and bring it to an exhaust shop and have them weld on a new end flange.

It would leak for sure....plus it isn't a good place to have exhaust gas escaping. Carbon Monoxide = death or at least sickness.

It will leak. I took a ball peen hammer to hammer one of mine out, then went to Lowes and just got a replacement bolt/nut.

Mig or Tig weld a nut onto whats left and wind it out. If you dont have welding gear visit a local workshop.

technique is to weld through the centre of a nut onto whats left of the stud. Just be careful not to weld the stud into the flange. After the heat of welding they often wind out really easily.
