good compression numbers. Your oil control rings could be affected though, which doesn't show up on a compression test, same thing about valve seals.

If you are sure that the increased consumption started with Castrol Edge then a simple inexpensive test would be to change oil again. One quart every 1k miles is still considered acceptable, it's on the cusp of being high but still within limits. 3 quarts is unacceptable.

How old is your pcv valve ?, if it is more than 2 years old I'd change it out, it's a 3 dollar part so don't waste your time re-using it if it is old.

I would try switching to Castrol GTX 10w-30, or Amsoil 5w40 or Amsoil 10w30 and see if you notice a difference in consumption. Change the pcv valve if it is old.

 

What is a PCV valve and where is it located? Does it begin to leak after a while or something?

 

same story here, AP1 owner burning a quart of mobil1 every 1k miles.

swtiched over to castrol edge expecting a little bit less oil consumption, to no avail. castrol edge still burned a quart every 1k.

the last time i added another quart of oil, i checked my PCV valve as well. it needed good hard shakes to get the rattle; i've replaced my PCV valve and will check after another 1000 miles.

 

Same boat here. Tried Mobil 1, Tried Royal Purple, Tried Edge.. My car annihilates any type of oil u throw at it. I also burn about a quart every 1k. I also VTEC everyday..

 

It's the black plastic plug looking device in the middle of the driver side of the valve cover with a hose leading to the intake manifold. The pcv valve pulls out, move the clamp and twist out the valve. Chances are it is overdue for replacement and it is a very inexpensive item to replace.

Many owners claim that Krankvents have solved their consumption problems on this forum, try a search on them.

Anyone know whats up with the TCT dying after 3k miles?

many claim oil type to be the cause of the TCT failure. who will ever know?!

Some have had good luck with krank vents, but others say the opposite. Maybe people who have installed krank vents were just needing a new pcv valve?

 

Replaced the PCV today, how can you actually tell if the old one is bad though? I shook it and could hear rattling.

 

I believe if it does rattle when you shake its good.

 

1qt every 1000 miles is normal. Honda techs will tell you Honda knows the motor will do this and AP1 drivers can only reduce it by staying out of vtec.

Frankly I wouldn't waste anytime on this. Change back to Mobil 1 or a 'thicker' oil if you like. Then drive. 1qt every 1000 miles is normal.
