Default buying 2000 S, new clutch doesn't feel right

i'm looking into buying a NFR, first year S with 113k miles and a "new" clutch. unfortunately, the clutch is not OE. the owner tells me it was replaced with a clutch from JEG's in the last couple months. when i took it for a test drive, the clutch did not release until maybe the last .38" of clutch travel. i mean it was all the way at the top.

i drove an '04 two years ago at a dealership, and i don't remember the clutch feeling like this. what is normal, maybe two thirds of clutch stroke.

i checked the majestic honda exploded parts diagram and i see no adjustment.

what do you guys think. is this normal, or should i expect to change out this aftermarket clutch for a real oe. if so, that will definitely affect my offer on the car.

other than the clutch, the car needs a passenger headlamp (hazed), radio (only bass plays through speakers), has had front clip repainted, tires are mismatched but have good tread, rf spoiler-wheel flare has been curbed-scratched and the curb also dented the underside of the passenger rocker panel. additionally, the deck lid has a small dent in the top center. good news is the top was replaced with glass rear window.

anything else i should be aware of, or check out. kbb says this car is worth $7500 without major clutch issues. what do you guys think. (sorry, no question mark on this fried keyboard)....

tia,

do you know if this has a clean title?
why was the front clip repainted?

and for the clutch, you shouldn't have to come up that much to catch.

father of the high school girl owner, worked at an audi dealer in tulsa and got a "deal" for the girl. however, while sitting on the lot, the car was said to be vandalized. fender and driver lamp smashed (is why pass is hazed), and the shift knob was stolen... i know, sounds weird, but that is the story. i don't have the vin yet, but will carfax it before i make an offer.

yes, that's what i was thinking. clutch should not disengage at three eights from top of stroke. my first remark was that the clutch was worn out, but they assured me it had just been replaced. maybe it was a poorly made chinese replacement.... i personally only used oe, usa and japanese replacement parts. chinese stuff is always a waste of time and money.

Sounds like a new clutch. I thought usually when the clutch is going out, it catches at the very bottom if at all. I had a TT that used to grab at about half an inch from the floor board until it stopped grabbing at all and needed a clutch replacement. The grab point can be adjusted.

My clutch grabs like the day it was made, and it grabs at the top 25% of the pedal.

Just a little info for you...

There's very little play in my OE clutch. While I can't accurately guage .38" (How did you come up with that number anyway?) I would say that there's definitely an inch or less of play before it engages on my OE 06

that is what i would expect from a properly designed system. i don't remember the dealership '04 clutch feeling funny... definitely something not right with this new clutch. with that said, i'm going to pass on the S. i'm not spending that kind of money and have to drop the trans to fix what should have been fixed right the first time.
