Default Can rear axles be swapped side to side?

Hey all, been getting real bad shakes upon acceleration, especially in turns. I know the fix is to swap out the CV joint cups from left to right, but the guy I'm going to see (Darrin, West End) said he's swapped out the axles from left to right and vice versa and it is the same as swapping the inner CV joints.

Can someone clarify this for me? I thought that the passenger and drivers side axles are of different lengths. However he stated he has done this for other S2k owners by request. So I'm confused by this other 'fix'...

I had it checked out this weekend at Honda World, they said that when the car is in the lift and they accelerate you can see the play in the CV joints. I'm pretty sure this is it, but am not up to spending $1000 parts plus labor to have this fixed if there's a cheaper 'patch'.

(p.s. I'm really trying to save a few bucks and I do not have the necessary tools to do this myself, so doing any kind of work or inspection myself is out of the question.)

They are not interchangeable. Only the cups.

I am very confused by some people saying you can swap axles and other saying you cannot.

Darrin my alignment and suspension mechanic said he's done this for s2k owners before. Hardtopguy also suggested swapping out axles vs swapping CV cups as it does the same thing.

However, I know the axles are different lengths so I feel that HAS to have some negative effect on the car.

I'd really love to hear a couple technical thoughts on this. I've done some exhaustive research on this topic, so please don't say it's been posted before.

Ask Derrin how he swaps different length axles from side to side.

The difference is so small that supposedly you cannot tell... (according to HardTopGuy)

unfortunately, the axles are different lenghs.

look for yourself.

let darrin figure it out for himself...if he says he's done it before, he has only swapped cv joint/cups.

What I don't understand is the conflicting technical reports.

According to the Helms manual, it appears that you CAN adjust the driveshaft lengths (I think). Also apparently some people HAVE done this, I got 2 recommendations today for it, so there has to be more to it.

I've attached a link to a pic from the manual...

what exactly does this mean? I'm not a supermechanic so I don't understand this diagram or what it means.

The axle length is only adjustable by means of "burping the boot". This is to set the lenght before install, so the boot is not balooning up, or vacuuming in.

The is nearly a TWO inch difference between the axles. They cannot be swapped.

If someone actually managed to make them fit then they are incompetent!

Trust me swapping the inner buckets is the proper and only way.

does anybody know if you can swap the outer buckets from left to right or can you use two right side outer buckets to replace a bad left one
