Default Can syncros wear out!?

I've read a lot of people who endorse double-clutching because doing so saves your syncros(?).
From what I can tell that's what they're there for. It seems to be like telling someone to open the door and drop his foot on the ground to stop the car so he can save his brake pads.

What I want to know is: can syncros(?) actually wear out? and if so what happens when they do? what are the symptoms?

I do believe that syncos can wear when the "teeth" on the syncros are non-existent. I believe the symtoms are that it is harder to shift intio gear abd possilby the shifter popping out of gear.

I'm not a mechanic however

Our S2000 synchro is made of copper. Yes this will wear out and is expensive to replace.

Are there any expert on synchro on this board, please post more comments about this topic ?

If you have proper lubrication, the "wear" on the syncho wouldn't really be a concern on a down shift as much as the possibility of cracking (IMO). I think the synchros are made from brass (or some other soft metal), and might not be able to handle thousands of 7K RPM synchronizations without cracking.

You are talking about down shifting, right?

Yes they can wear out. Rev matching helps save them, a double clutch downshift (properly excecuted) helps even more.

The thing is I've never heard of, or seen anyone replacing their synchros.

I cracked a 5th gear synchro in my '91 Acura Integra, and my brother cracked his 5th gear synchro in his '94 BMW 328. We both had the same habit of accelerating hard up through 3rd gear, skipping 4th and going straight in to 5th. They both happened at about 50K miles. One day 5th gear shifts were perfect, then all of a sudden, 5th couldn't be selected without a grind. It cost me $1400 in conjunction with a new clutch. My brother never fixed his.

Our cars aren't that old yet, just wait. The synchros will wear out and when they do, it will be very difficult to get into the gear with the worn synchros. Usually, the first to go will be the second gear synchro.

My last roadster had the transmission replaced due to this problem. It was cheaper for me to install a used transmission than to have mine rebuilt.

I've had my tranny go bad on me twice in the first year of ownership. In each case it was repaired under warranty. In each case it was the syncho as it relates to 5th gear. The symptoms were difficulty in getting into or out of 5th and finally I almost could not get it out of 5th at all !!!

Neither I, the dealer, nor anyone I've spoken to about it have any idea why this happened. Obviously, I'm not dropping the clutch on 5th to take off or downshifting from high rpm into 5th.
