Default Can't shift into 1st gear

Was performing a 1-2 upshift at high RPM and it grinded without properly engaging 2nd(as has happened a couple of times).

Now I can't push the shifter into 1st, the gate is no longer there. Other gears are fine.

Am I screwed? Is 1st gear finished or could it be something more minor to do with the shift linkage?

Thanks!

Try moving shifter into the 3rd or 4th gear position and then moving it to the 1st gear position.

put it in first and drive it off a cliff...problem fixed

In all honesty billman will probably chime in. Does it go in with the car off?

I've tried it both with the engine on and with engine off, as well as going into another gear first before trying to engage 1st.

But it's not like a normal situation where it's simply hard to engage 1st (in which case going into 3rd first to to even things out would work), I've tried every "normal" trick and I simply can't find a defined gate anymore. Happened immediately after the botched 1-2 upshift and I haven't been able to sort it out...

been driving a bit with no 1st gear and I dont want to continue much longer as it will overly strain the pressure plate.

I've noticed in the past that sometimes it's been slow to disengage (clutch is in but tranny is still halfway in gear) so if I did a quick shift and essentially popped it into 2nd w/o full disengagement from 1st, could this have affected 1st gear?

You can try the basics if you havnt already. Clutch bleed and check for leaks behind the clutch peddle. Im stumped... My 2000 s2k doesnt like first either but def goes in after touching the other gears first or after warm.

If u pump ur clutch pedal about 5 times and it still doesn't want to go in 1st, now that tells u ur slave and master is good. I'm thinking it might be ur clutch spring, cause the s2 doesnt have a linkage. The shifter goes straight to the tranny.

I think it's posible to bend the fork with a misshift. Do a search on this forum. I seem to recall some specific shift lever manipulation you would want to try before going any further with this problem.

I did the same, burnout, not hitting 2nd gear properly and suddenly my 1st is gone. Can put it in, but jerky, need to push it in and pull it out. Did U solve the problem? What was wrong please?

Maybe try releasing the clutch in neutral before trying to place the shifter into first gear.
