Default Car died while driving in the rain...

So I was getting onto a local street from the off-ramp going around 35 mph when all sudden the engine cuts out. All the lights on the dash turn on, the accelerator loses power, and smokes starts billowing from the exhaust. I didn't have enough momentum to get to the right side so my car died in the middle of the road.

When it came to a complete stop, I tried starting it up again. At this point, it makes the sound that it's trying to start up, but more smoke started to flow out so I let go of the start button. After an hour, the tow truck took it back to my place. Damn this southern California rain!!

Is there any idea what could have happened? The possibility running through my head is hydrolock, but I didn't run through any shallow/deep puddles to cause my CAI to absorb water. God I hope it's not hydrolock..

Thank you for your help..

Why do people always roll the dice with CAI's for 2 hp.

Where is your CAI locateed?

it's a AEM CAI. Like most, it's located underneath the fender facing the cooling duct of the front bumper.

Did you notice anything odd prior to the breakdown? I would start by looking at the fluids checking the level etc and looking for anything else that could indicate the cause. I've only heard of hydrolock occuring with long ram intakes going through puddles; not saying to rule that out. If the smoke was very light gray (close to white), I would closely inspect the coolant system. If it were darker gray, I would pay more attention to the oil. Examining spark plugs and performing a compression test will give you more insight into what happened.

Here is my thread from the So. Cal section..... Same thing but I didn't get to notice any smoke.....

Well I was driving home today from work and coming down the freeway(puddle free) but the rain was coming down pretty hard. I thought to myself that i had hydro planed but I didn't. I lost power and then regained it after a split second. I continued to go for 2 more seconds and just lost complete power so I took it out of gear and coasted to the shoulder. Called up work to send me a tow truck to pick my ass up. I haven't tried to crank it cause I'm to scared to.....

Not to sure what kind of damage i may have caused confused.gif I called up my buddy that works for Honda. From what i told him he said i might have a bent valve(s) but not sure but since the motor didn't clunk when it shut off most likely i didn't throw a rod. He will be coming over on sat to inspect the car and take the motor apart. Meanwhile it sitting at my yard a work drying out for a few days then towing it back home to work on it.

Above i posted pictures if what the intake looks like when i installed it and where the car is at now......

Any input would help me feel better or worse.... Just give it to me straight banghead.gif

Thanks Guys sadwavey.gif

Just to add one more thing........... The car has no factory warranty but it does have the 100k 10yr extended on it don't know if this is thumbsup.gif or a thumbsdown.gif

Car didn't really make any noise at all! Just kind of died. I'm just praying that the filter got to wet and didn't let the intake breath..... In any case, I'm out of a car for now cry.gif

First you should take out your spark plugs, and then crank the car to see if water will shoot out. After your sure that water is out...then you should do an oil change. Run the car and then change the oil again and see if there are any problems after that.
