Car number 8 today. 3 cars with broken retainers in the past three weeks.

Good news and bad news with this mild case, stay tuned....

Over-rev history...milage...?

I'm wondering if they are starting to just "get old" in the early cars. We've been seeing a spat of injector issues...and diff issues...and retainer issues on older cars.

Guess I'd better just go ahead and get mine done...only one over-rev about 3 years ago...been inspecting every year (~10-12k miles).

are you saying you over-revved 3 years ago without any problems?

have you done a compression and leakdown test recently?

i had an overrev 2 years ago, and the symptoms didn't show up until 2 years later.

2 years ago, overrev. did a compressiona and leakdown test, all checked out fine. inspected retainers, all fine. replaced them anyway.

2 years later i had low compression, no CEL whatsoever...

turns out the symptoms got worse progressively and slowly...

i had warped valve face, that i relapped, and warped valve guides that i had replaced...

i think you should do periodic compression and leakdown tests.

It was my car. We bought the car brand new and NO over-rev at all throughout its history. The car also has about 45k miles on it, 5k of which were turbo charged.

I think this one is an 02. I checked it back in the day, car had about 37k. It now has 45k.

This is the ORIGINAL owner. He is very confident he has never mechanically over-reved.

When originally checked, the retainers were QUESTIONABLE. This is now one of only two cars where I thought they may be cracked, but was not sure. Obviously cars in the early stages.

In the 8000 mile span, the retainers still looked the same as when originally checked. Maybe BARELY more than last time. The two in question were broken. About 4 more were cracked that I did not think would be.

The car has gone turbo since then.

F22 intake retainers and keepers to go.

Good save Bill....

Is this the first car you've seen with retainer issues that wasn't over-reved?

My car has been a good constant to gauge the mileage factor. I'm at 75k and retainers are fine.

Even when I heel toe, I'm hitting the limiter once in a while on the blip. I really am trying to crack them

I'm starting to think no F20 is safe.

Hard to say. The BIG question is, have the other cars been over-reved. It's all speculation.

I've been waiting for a reliable source such as spec_ops2087 to help sort it out.
