Changing the computer chip for better performance.
I haven't ever seen an aftermarket chip for the S2000, but I don't think it has anything to do with the chip being soldered to the board. I think it has more to do with the difficulty in decrypting the OEM maps.
I bought an aftermarket chip for my '91 Integra (which had its chip soldered on the board) from Dinan many years ago. They sent me a modified ECU with a socket installed, the "performance chip", and a copy of the OEM chip. After installing it, I sent my ECU back to them, which they modified for the next buyer.
