Default Changing Tranny oil.

Should I just drain it then fill it like it says in the manual? Or should I drain it. fill it, then play with the gears then check it?

Huh?

1. Get 2 qts. of tranny fluid
2. Remove fill bolt first(to make sure you can even refill in the first place)
3. Remove drain bolt
4. Drain old fluid
5. Put back drain bolt and torque to proper spec
5. Put one entire bottle and 3/4 of the other in the tranny.
6. Level out car(aka lower jack) and let excess drain out of fill hole.
7. Put back fill bolt and torque to spec

I don't bother with step 6. If you use a pump to pump the oil in, the amount of oil that the pump will extract from the 2 bottles is just right for the fill. A slight overfill is a good thing anyway.

So are you pumping oil in with the drain bolt already put back on? I think I'd still feel safer following what honda606 said. I think that's standard practice, isn't it?

You definitely have to replace the drain bolt before refilling, or it will just drain right back out. The reason why I don't let it drain back out after levelling is because I want a slight overfill. Our tranny is notorious for grinding when the oil gets hot, so more oil volume helps. It is also documented to have loss of oil pressure under certain conditions due to the placement of the oil pump inlet so a slight overfill helps with this too. A transmission is not like an engine where the oil gets whipped up by the crank if there is too much oil.

BTW, the "drain" bolt is always put back on before filling. It's the "fill" bolt that is left off till the job is done.
Whoops, I meant the fill bolt...

I'm about to do a tranny fluid change this afternoon and try GMSFM for the first time. I think I'll try the slight overfill method this time to see if I notice anything.

Xviper...do you have a guesstimate as to what 200cc would equate to in quarts?

The Helms manual states 1.56 qts. at fluid change and 1.71 at overhaul. Would 1.75 qts. be a bit too much? The reason I ask is because I don't have a pump. I run a tube from the engine bay down to the tranny housing and just use a regular funnel to refill.

A US qt. is very close to a liter, so 200 cc is pretty close to 1/5th of a qt. I suggest you fill the tranny with "about" what it'll take to do a proper fill. Then lower to level and let excess drain. Note how much fluid is left in your bottle and put a line on it about 1/5th qt below where you see fluid. Raise the car and put in as much as it takes to bring the level in the bottle to your mark. Button it up and you're done.
BTW, 1.75 qt. would be real good.
