Default Check Engine Light

I just purchased an 00 S2K a few days ago. Since i bought it used from a VW dealership, there is no warantee with the vehicle.
Ive been driving the car around for a few days and thus far have not experienced any problems until this morning.

I started the car up and was about to back out of my garage when i noticed that my check engine light had come on. Ive heard that this is a common problem with loose gas caps, so i got out and made sure that the gas cap was tightly secured. I then restarted the car and began to drive then i noticed that when i apply light throttle, the engine revs began to oscilate up and down, up and down.

On half throttle and at idle, the rpms are fine. But i did notice a very soft "put" from the motor.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what could be the problem.

Also, i know how to check codes on a older hondas, but i do not know where the engine check code plug is on the S2Ks (if there even is one).

Thanks guys

Welcome to the board, sorry to see you hear with a problem so soo.

Maybe we only hear from the used S2000 buyers with problems but it seems like they have more than their fair share. No warranty at all? How many miles on the car?

The loose gas cap can cause the CEL. If it does it will take several driving cycles to clear itself, but will not make the car run poorly - that's something else.

I have a web page with some help on checking codes here.

Umm.. So you bought the car used, so you can get ahold of the previous owner and see why they got rid of the car. Did you run a carfax on it before you bought it?

BTW how can a used car not have at least a 90 day warr?

What else can you tell us abou the problem?

BTW did you try to reset the CEL by disconnecting the battery?

Thanks guys for your inputs.

I actually was on my way to school this morning and didnt have enough time to reset the ECU. I get off work in a few hours so ill go home and try that out. Hopefully it will be an easy fix.

As far as warantee goes, i contacted honda and obviously my car is out of factory warantee, so then i called the VW dealer from which i bought the car from and the salesman i spoke to told me that they have a 30 day "policy". Not warantee, but theyll look at the car for me without charge. I was pretty relevied to find that out. (-8<

Oh yeah, my car has 34500 miles on it, and i thought i ran a carfax on it before i bought it, but i was in such a rush to buy a car, i lost track of which s2k i ran the report on. Turns out that the car has a clean record except for a milage discrepency. The discrepency was reported at 39000k. So im assuming that the prevous owner tried to save miles, by changing the ECU/Gauge Cluster, or he switched it out to make it look like it has lower miles.

The dealership said absolutely nothing. I shouldve probed deeper.
When i was on a test drive i actually found a carfax printout in the glove compartment. I thumbed through it and it looked clean. They probably omitted the part containing the milage discrepency. I should ask them about it when i take the car in tomorrow.
