'check engine' trouble codes
Hola amigos,
I just got my roadster a few weeks ago, and it's the best thing since sex! She's a gorgeous black ext. (red int.) 3,100 mile heartbreaker I got on eBay. I haven't had much cockpit time, since I've been out of town (damn work). The little bit of driving I've done has been just what the doctor ordered, though.
The 'check engine' warning light just came on at about 3,500 miles. I don't have a manual yet, so I made an appointment with the local Honda dealer for Thursday. But I would like to troubleshoot this myself until then, to see how serious it may be. I am very leery of other people working on my machines. That is, until I see their work myself or hear proof of their competence from someone I trust.
Is there an easy way to get the ECU to reveal which trouble code(s) have been flagged? This should be easy with OBDII, right?

The S2K uses very generic OBDII codes. You can get s/w and a cable off the 'net to use with a computer. Oftentimes you can get local shops to read the code for you. The connector is under the passenger side dash.
Thanks Strike,
I was hoping it would be as easy as shorting out two of the pins in the ECU's test harness plug, turn on the key, and watch some light on the dash blink out the code. I know some make/models are that easy.
Can you suggest what I need in the way of manuals (preferably on CD). Is Helm the only game in town? The links in Honda's website send me to Helm, anyway. I had a factory service manual for my old Datsun 280Z that was way, way better than any of the third party manuals. Is there one definitive service manual for the S2000?

The Helm manual is the main service manual for the car. I believe they also have an electrical manual separate from the main one.
As far as shorting pins and seeing codes on the dash, I've never heard of that for the S2K and I've been in the community since the car's inception.

Apparently you _can_ read OBD-II codes on the S2000 by just shorting one pin to ground. See the link to Modifry's page that I posted.
You may not get all the data, but I imagine that it may be enough for many situations.
