Default Cleaning the Engine

How do you guy's clean your engine? My prelude engine is filthy and I want to clean it myself. Any "how to's" available?

Also, what is "steam cleaning" and can you do it yourself? What about thsoe cleansers and "degreasers" they sell at the auto parts shops?

Thanks!

I use Simple Green. It's works pretty good and is biodegradable. I have also used a pressure washer (a bit different from a steam cleaner...ie. not HOT). That works very well with the Simple Green.

Just affix a 4 ft long 4" PVC pipe and elbow to your airbox (we'll call it a snorkel), and find a body of water with a relatively steep entry angle (boat ramps work well). Drive in with the engine running (remember - hot = clean!) and when it's completely submerged, lock the parking brake and go over the really grimey spots your engine with a stiff bristled brush.

Do we have to worry about water sensativity on our engine. I know that English cars are very supseptable to water entry. I once blew a mass air sensor on a Land Rover.

I have used Simple Green and think it is great stuff. However, S100 is a better. Go to a motorcycle shop and get it. It is made to clean motorcycle engines. Can spray it on like Simple Green and then rinse after letting it sit for a few minutes. Scrubbing with a soft brush works even better. It leaves a nice finish on powder coated parts such as the valve cover, brightens the color. Costs about $10 for a spray bottle full. I bought my last at a Harley shop.
