cluster blinks when going into reverse
Hey guys, I have a problem that I think might be clutch related. When I put it into reverse, if the trannys cold the gauge cluster blinks. Ive heard if it blinks its either the alternator or the battery. But maybe my clutch isnt engaging all the way and its somewhat stalling it? Because if I also put it into first when the trannys cold the car will move about 2 inches forward as I put it into first. Is this normal or does it sound like a clutch problem?
It's normal. When your car is cold, the air pump is on which takes up a good amount of the alternator's "juice". It's also recharging the battery from starting the car, maybe you're adding steering angle (the car has electronic steering assist), etc. When the car is cold, the alternator is a little loaded down. Add in reverse lights and the gauge cluster will dim for a split second.
Moving about 2'' forward in 1st when cold is normal as well. The gears are still spinning, the fluid is still thick. Put that together, and it has enough force to move the car forward slightly. It probably also makes a "thump". Normal. Wait a little more before putting it in gear if it bothers you. Push the clutch in, wait a few seconds, and THEN put it in gear. It shouldn't move forward in that case. It happens when the car is warm also sometimes.
