Default clutch issues

so i was on a drive last night on highland valley rd (san diego) and all of a sudden my clutch started to do this weird thing where it seemed to engage all in the bottom 10 percent of travel (close to the floor). it seemed to work fine, but engaged really quickly, the top 90 percent of travel was just very soft.

when it came time to leave this morning, it didnt want to get into gear at all from stopped. i checked and it doesnt appear to be leaking clutch fluid, but the fluid was very low. it could be driven as long as i started the car with it in gear, then made sure i was back in gear before i stopped, which is weird, because it would let me sit still with the car in gear and clutch pushed in, so it was like it was disengaged, but not enough to push into gear (if that makes sense).

i went and got some more fluid and put it back into the normal level, that seemed to help, the bottom 50 percent of travel now seem to be working instead of the 10 percent it was before, im now thinking that there is air in the line making this top half soft. i could now shift it into all gears while the car was running, but after my car sat for a while (couple hours) it has gone back to being rather difficult to shift again, although it will shift into gear, just not very smoothly. looking in the clutch fluid reservoir it looks very dirty, the brake fluid i put in was nearly clear, and now it looks almost like it has mixed with grease or some other dark substance.

i will be taking the car in to the honda dealer first thing tomorrow (monday) morning, so im not sure if im asking you guys anything other than your opinions. from reading around the forums, im guessing its a problem with either the master or slave cylinder. and of course as soon as i find out whats going on from honda ill post it up here so if someone else (who is out of warranty) has this issue they can have a head start in looking for the right solution.

you're gonna have to bleed the clutch master cylinder to get rid of your problem. I had the same problem a few months back.

Master cyl is leaking from dirty fluid. 90% of s2k's have the same leak, and will eventually have the same problem.

Check your carpet, you'll find a damp spot just under the back of the master.

Just dry the master out clean with a paper towel and refill it every 10k and you'll never have a problem.

Yours has air in it.

BTW the leak will eventually stop with new fluid.

thanks for all the replies, i just picked up my car, they replaced the master and slave cylinder, it was all under warranty, so price wasnt an issue. they said it was just leaking internally, not exactly sure what that means.

i must say, it is nice when a service department under promises and over delivers. they said it would take 2 days (which is ridiculous for this kind of service), and it only took 1, and the ended up replacing both cylinders instead of just one.

next time ill try bleeding it myself, but when my car is only 2 weeks old (to me, i bought it used), i rather just make them replace it.

for those who come across this forum, here is a how to for replacing the clutch slave cylinder:

That means that there would be very little hydrolic pressure at the clutch release fork/pressure plate. That's why you couldn't get it into gear and or shift properly.

Your car should be good to go for at least a couple of years after they're done
