clutch longevity
My buddy just spent 2200$ to replace his clutch on his my01 s2000 with 35,000
miles on it. He claims he did not beat on it and drove the car with respect and care.
I was wondering how many owners also had premature clutch problems. I have my 05 and because of the clutch delay valve, I expect it would wear out even faster. Has anyone gotten long life from theirs, and if so how many miles did you get from it. I realize that shifts in high rpm would wear the clutch much sooner, but
I would think it should last much longer than that. He claims most honda dealers only have one mechanic trained to work on s2000 and his car was in the shop for over 4 weeks, Have the my 04-05s s2000 had a higher frequency of repairs on the clutches due to these delay valves and is it really worthwhile to replace them?

His initial symptoms was a shudder/vibration when shifting and originally thought it
was a driveshaft problem, but it was indeed his clutch, the dealer claims its not a warranty item and is not covered. Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks!
First off, your bud got taken to the cleaners. I would have done his clutch in one day. There's lots of us here at s2ki that do our own clutches, it doesn't take a special s2k tech. Just someone who's good with mechanics and tools, and is patient.
As far as the delay valve, it's there to reduce dif failures from clutch dumps. Lots of guys remove the delay. If you're keen on manual trans, the delay won't be an issue. If you drag race, it will. The s2k is a roadster, not a dragster.
Clutch life is 99.9% driver dependant. It all depends how you start off in first, how much slip you allow between shifts, and if you heel/toe or rev match your downshifts.

There no need to start a brand new thread just so you can add this bit:

There's a thing called an "EDIT".

If I had to, I could do the job in 2-3 day's top's, and I have never done a clutch on an S2K. If I did a clutch install a couple of time's on an S2K, I'm sure I could do a good job in less than one day. 4 week's is a little bit lengthy.
I'm going to try to prolong my clutch as long as I can. I had an 86 CRX that the clutch went out on. The friction material had very little wear. A piece of the friction disc housing broke off, (probably from reving the motor to 6,500 rpm's all the time) and became wedged in between the friction disk and the pressure plate rendering it useless. The clutch was locked up permanently. Same exact thing happened on my Del Sol. Plenty of friction material, (practically brand new) a piece of friction disk housing broke off and became wedged in between the friction disk and the pressure plate, thus locking the clutch permanently. The piece that broke off was a piece of metal that surround's one of the spring's on the friction disk.
Seeing as the S2k rev's to 9k rpm's, (AP1
) I would speculate to say that the clutch disk housing's are stronger than the one's in the Civic's and Del Sol's. Unless my clutch break's the way it did in my CRX and my Del Sol, with my aggressive, but gentle driving style, my clutch should last well over 50k mile's.

I'm at 50,000 miles on the original clutch. and considering i race the piss out of my car, I think that this has more to do with driver than anything else.
Regardless of how the car is driven. Makes me wonder though, what kind of life you'd have gotten out of the clutch if you didn't play with is as much?

And like yours, there was plenty of friction material left on the disk, and the flywheel and pressure plate looked fine.
Now my S2000 rattles and buzzes when decelerating between 4k and 3k rpm. Allegedly, it's the springs in the disk. I can tolerate the noise with the top down, but I'll have to replace the clutch when I start to drive the car regularly in bad weather.
Two Honda products, two bad clutch disks. I may be a slow learner, but I've gotten the message loud and clear.
