Hey guys,
I bought my 00 in October with 29,000 miles. It was running out of warranty so I took it in for the noisy clutch TSB repair. They did it for free and things have been much better until lately.
It seems that if I do not keep the clutch pressed firmly down to the floor it groans and will try to move forward. I have driven manual transmission cars my entire life and never had any problems. I have kept many of them over 100k and never replaced a clutch. We are not talking about a clutch 3/4 down. I mean all but maybe the last 1/8th inch or so.
Now as I sit in traffic I have started to smell the aroma of burning clutch even with the clutch fully depressed. I have made sure that I mash it clean to the floor cause I am paranoid about losing the clutch.
Any body know what this is all about? I only have 31,000 miles now.

search for clutch replacement. You've already gotten more miles than i have out of 2 clutches. Keep in mind that you didn't by a civic...

Are you telling me that you went through 2 clutches in 2000 miles? I never heard of any car that ate clutches like that.
That is all I have driven. At this rate I need to stop in for a oil change and clutch replacement at the same time.

 

no. one went at 16k. i'm at 26 and this one hasn't got much left. I, like you, got the 1st on done under the TSB but they're not going for it again. I've had my transmission seal replaced 2 for leakage and i'm hoping to get this one to leak so they'll replace the tranny at which point i'm going to throw in an aftermarket clutch and since the Helms book suggests AGAINST resurfacing the flywheel, probably a lighter flywheel

 

Elliott, how's your clutch fluid look? Is it dark? Do you know if the dealer bothered to flush and bleed the clutch fluid when they did the clutch job? It sounds almost like they tried but didn't do a very good job or didn't do it at all and you may have air in the system. When they did the clutch job, they have to remove the slave cylinder and may have jostled the plunger, allowing air in.

That sounds logical to me.
I checked the fluid this morning and it is almost black. It is the nastiest fluid I ever saw.
I will bleed the system this week end and see what turns up.

Why not take it back to the dealership that did the work and have them fix what it appears they didn't do right to begin with? The least that they can do is properly replace the clutch fluid and you would then have documentation that things were not right in case the clutch is ruined.

 

If bleeding the clutch fluid doesn't help, then you may have too much free play in the clutch pedal. The pedal can be adjusted to remove free play and raise the engagement point.
