clutch sliping maybe?
My 02 s2k was used when I got it with 46k on it. My s2k now has about 50k now after a year of me owning it. The other day I tired to takeoff hard out of first gear and the only way I can explain it is that there was a gradual acceleration instead of a takeoff when I released the clutch. I then tried to shift at about 8500 rpm (while in vtec) and got the same kind of response (the rpm's dropped and gradually came up again instead of hard acceleration). Is this a clutch slipping like I think it is or do I possibly have different problems with maybe leaking clutch fluid or master or slave cylinder problems?
if you were to shift at 8500 rpm then apply gas again immediately after the next gear was selected, the RPMs would climb quickly since the engine would be spinning with little resistance as the clutch is not grabbing the flywheel. sounds like you were experiencing the exact opposite symptoms of a slipping clutch.
You have to read between the OP's lines a little, but this sounds like the typical "slipping, stinking clutch" syndrome. It happens when you try to accelerate hard but feather the clutch a bit. The launch experts side-slip their foot off the clutch pedal instead to avoid it (search for "launch"). One episode by itself won't destroy your clutch (I've done it), but repeats are not recommended.
