Coilovers vs. Springs
This is a newb question but I plan on adding wheels to my car soon 18"'s. Are coilovers necessary or can I use springs to lower it instead. Also can someone explain to me what exactly coilovers do? Just adjust ride settings (shock, rebound, and height) or is there a significant increase in handling? Its just such a large difference in price. BTW, I hardly track the car main auto-x but nothing serious.
Thanks

you can never compair coilovers to spring..
you can compare coilovers to damper kits
You can use springs but that is not the propper way to go if you plan to auto X.
Coilovers that are good can be costly depending on your financial situation.
Damper kits are in the middle.. as good as coilovers on track but usualy 1 setting and you can adjust damping. Coilovers gives you a wide range of settings. Like damping / height / + with camber kits you can adjust camber / .. coils you can control anything..
Propper Damper Kits will make you car handle great like the Amuse kits is perfect. There is a amuse damper kit on an s2k in NY and at auto X its top runner when ever it does show up.
Springs are a waste of money...
I'm planning on getting the amuse damper kit my self because its balanced so well for the car.

The S2000 comes stock with "Coil Overs". You can replace the stock springs with aftermarket springs, and you still have coil overs.
What people often mean when the refer to aftermarket coil-overs, however, is an assembly of a spring with a matched shock absorber with some sort of adjustable perch for tuning corner weight and ride height.
To further complicate things, you can buy a product like Ground Control's adjustable perch kits that work with either stock shocks, Koni's, or GC's own shock, and pick any rate Eibach spring you want to go with them.
My advice, if you don't track the car or competitively autoX, is to use somewhat stiffer springs with the GC perch kit, a cost-effective way of improving the handling and adjusting the ride height. Of course *any* spring or perch modifications will likely put you in a fairly uncompetitive class for SCCA AutoX.
