Default Comptech Exhuast Question...

Hey,

Ive just got my paws on a second hand Comptech ehaust system.
Its comes in three sections, the middle and the two back boxes.

Im pretty sure i will need to replace the gasket at the cat (got that so its cool). But does anyone know if there is any other gaskets used in this system? i.e between the back boxes and middle?

Thankx!

I, too, got one second hand and had the same question. I called Comptech and they said that most people think that there is no gasket b/c Comptech uses a custom gasket that fits in an inset at the end that sits flush with the lip. If the lip is dirty, most people won't even know it's there. If there was no gasket, you would able to see that there is an inset on the lip and would immediately know something is missing. You can check to see if there is a gasket by cleaning the lip area and using your fingernails to see if you can lift off the gasket a bit out of the inset.

That being said, I got this information after I installed the exhaust and haven't had a chance to verify this yet. I'll probably do so in the next couple of weeks.

Yes, there should be gaskets at all intersections (at least according to Comptech). The only difference should be that they don't look like the "regular" gaskets that you're used to, but rather are ones that are inset into the ends.

I too aquired a used comptech exhaust. I purchased a generic gasket roll from a Pep place, cut them by hand and no problems in the last year!

Hmmm. That's odd. I bought a Comptech exhaust new from hardtopguy a while back and I don't recall any gaskets between the central pipe and the two muffler pipes. Yes, there is a factory gasket at the end of the cat (although I've repalced the cat with a testpipe so I have a different one in there now).

I didn't hear a leak when I put the thing on. OTOH, since I had nothing to compare to, maybe it's had a leak all along?
