Default Coolant change

Ive been planning on getting a radiator fluid flush and fill for like 6+ months, just havn't gotten to it, can anyone shed light on the importance of doing this promptly, or tell me how un important it is? Im not sure if the first owner changed it recently or not, its a MY00' with 45k miles, ive owned it for 1 year, and 12k miles

Worst case, it's 12 year old coolant in the system. I'd change it out. Use the OEM Honda Type II Coolant.

don't have my owner's manual handy but I think the recommendation is to replace the coolant every 10 years or 120,000 miles. You're over that timewise so you should do it soon. Definitely use the OEM Honda antifreeze. Your next coolant change isn't for another 5 years so the few extra bucks for OEM is worth it.

it's a very easy DIY----you'll need to bleed the air out of the system once you replace the coolant---there's two bleeder valves that you open til the coolant runs out then tighten them--one on the front of the engine where the radiator hose is attached and one on the hoses on the firewall--can't remember the sequence of which to do first but it's easy to do---maybe do a search on "bleeding coolant" and it should come up.

FYI---antifreeze is very tasty to cats and dogs and very very toxic (deadly) to them so if you spill any, be sure to dilute it right away with some water.

Speaking strictly from experience...

I have been messing with my radiator hose (top). Re-routing it to make room for an intake (an obsession of mine). Anyways, I drained some coolant out so it didn't splash all over my engine bay and onto the ground. Upon doing so I noticed it looked........ exactly like the new stuff.

I have 104k miles on my car. I purchased it with 20k and have never changed the radiator fluid. I monitor the temps daily with my Torque App. The Honda fluid is amazing.

However, a common to-do after buying a used car is to change ALL the fluids. Radiator... meh. Perhaps. If you want to sleep better at night buy some of this (2 gallons) and replace it. I recommend following Billmans Guide. This worked great for me. You may be able to get the coolant cheaper at a dealer. Call around; if that'd your thing.

That's the right coolant, but shipping from that retailer seems a tad expensive.Check with your local Honda dealer, or H and A. While you're at it, you can get a couple of oil filters and other stuff.

For some reason H and A classify this shipment as a chemical - limiting it to ground only; which to 32536 is 31 dollars?!

Majestic is 20 dollars cheaper. You're right though. You can probably get it even cheaper at a dealer (if you ask nicely). =)

don't mess around and just do it. you could put a call into your local honda dealer, have them run your vin number and see if the rad fluid change was done at some point in its history- that is, if Honda did the rad fluid change.

just do it the right way.

I used the OP's location (Tualatin, Oregon 97062), not one in Crestview, FL. It was comparable to Majestic (only $6 more) and their maintenance parts are much easier navigate. Since he's closer to H and A, he'd get his parts faster from them than Majestic.

However, my greater concern was that with Majestic was that I didn't get a chance to enter a zip code. I don't know if it was because they use IP address (I know they block foreign IP addresses) to estimate location to calculate shipping. As a result I didn't recommend or mention Majestic because I didn't want to give him false information. It seems to be that Majestic doesn't use IP address because your IP address which is assume is close to the Crestview, FL zip code you entered resulted in the same shipping quote as me.

Since I'm in the Northeast, I order from Majestic for myself.

As a matter of habit,I change the coolant in all my cars every-other year.

Coolant is cheap and only takes about an hr.

I use Prestone (yellow) 50/50 except the Z which uses Prestone Dex-Cool (Orange) 50/50.

Changing it fairly often is (IMO) probably more important than the brand name used.
