So I have been chasing a coolant smell from my car for over a year. You can always smell it but can't see any residue. I recently put some uv dye j. My coolant and you can clearly see it's coming from the over flow.

Has this happened to anyone before?

Anyone have any suggestions?

Trying to solve it before I buy a new over flow.

You just need a new cap and seal, two very cheap parts. I actually think it may be 3 cheap parts, the elbow thing may be a separate part. Either way, easy fix.

 

I get a strong coolant smell as well. I think it's mainly due to the fact that I run a higher pressure rad cap and when it dumps into the coolant tank it does so at a higher temp giving off more odours.

The coolant overflow tank is not air tight, it can't be by design. It will leak if the coolant level gets high enough and you do some constant hard cornering. Keep your fluid level below the full mark when hot, and you can expect some fluid to drip out.

Check to see that your coolant cap is on straight. I had one cap that would always want to thread on an angle so it wouldn't bottom out properly.

 

Well my thing is that even when I street I have this issue. Today at the track it was very apparent that it was from there. It does make sense that it's the cornering that sloshes it out

 

I noticed my oem tank lid doesn't go on very easy once i noticed a smell of coolant. Can visually see the lid isnt 360* anymore. I even bought an aftermarket aluminum tank but since the lid didnt have a hose attached that tank still spilled as well.
gonna get a whole new oem assembly.

 

I guess I'll try doing the little bits first. Hoping it clears it up

 

Try a new cap, make sure the washer is sandwiched tight between the hose and the underside of the cap. See if the leakage is reduced.

 

I am not talking about the radiator cap but the coolant cap

 

Did you add coolant recently?

Maybe your oveflow hose is clogged?

 

i havent added coolant ever really.

if the hose was clogged would the explain the smell?
