Default Coolant suggestions

My 2005 AP2 came with green coolant. it is a bit low and I was thinking of topping it up just to be safe. I asked the local dealer what they use, and they only use 'Type 2' Honda Coolant 2 part number 08CLA-P99-14ZY8 it is made in Thailand and they use it for everything, motorcycles included. I asked the parts guy about it and it is red (could be blue given the blue strip on the bottle) in color. I am not a fan of mixing coolants, is there an equivalent green coolant (other brands) that I can use for the S2000 that is compatible with the engine and radiator? I can look in the local market for a compatible green coolant. Note, I do not live in the US, I imported the car into the Middle East and its a pain in the ass because we do not have the same selection of products that you have in the states. Appreciate your input.

Last resort is to flush as much coolant as I can and then use the new stuff.

Type 2 is blue in color. I'd recommend draining/flushing out that green coolant and running new Type 2 coolant from Honda. You need 6 liters.

Just to double check, this is completely safe for this engine and OEM radiator? Thanks in advance.

You need an HOAT based coolant made for aluminum engines. The Honda stuff is best, everyone knows blue is the most scientifically advanced color. Don't mix coolants.

Dont mix Coolants. Mixing Silicat free coolants with coolants that contain silicate can end up with a big mess.
The Colour says NOTHING about the chemistry of the coolant. The manufacturers use what ever colour they want. For example, German green and Japanese green coolants have a total different chemistry.

Living in Germany, my choice would be Honda OEM (Blue) BASF Glysantin G30 (Purple-red), Ravenol HJC (Green) . So much for colours.....

From my Owner's Manual -- bet yours is identical:
Always use Honda Long-Life
Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2
. This
coolant is pre-mixed with 50 %
antifreeze and 50 % water. Never add
straight antifreeze or plain water.

If Honda antifreeze/coolant is not
available, you may use another
major-brand non-silicate coolant
as a
temporary replacement. Make sure it
is a high-quality coolant
recommended for aluminum engines.

Continued use of any non-Honda
coolant can result in corrosion,
causing the cooling system to
malfunction or fail. Have the cooling
system flushed and refilled with
Honda antifreeze/coolant as soon as
possible
.
(Emphasis added.)

This blue tinted coolant part No. OL999-9011 is Made in USA (at least my bottles). And probably other places as well as Thailand.

You need two (2) gallons. If what's in the car is in any way doubtful replace it.

If you look close you can read Made in the USA under the part number in the upper right corner on the back side.

.

I am assuming that the coolant that is in it now is Honda approved, the car only has 23K miles on it. The part number I had posted does not have the HOAT wording on it, and perhaps it is a given? It is made in Thailand.

If you are just topping it up use the blue Honda type 2 for now. When you get a chance do a full drain and flush/fill, sounds like the coolant in there might be old enough to need replacing if is still the old green fluid.

OL999-9011 is the coolant prescribed in the official Maintenance Manual. Easy to source. Your local Honda or Acura dealer should have it. I realize you're not in the USA but proper coolant is paramount as is the maintenance schedule.

Replace engine coolant at 120,000 miles or 10 years -- this passed 7 years ago on a MY 2005 car, maybe even 8 years ago depending on the build date. Then every 60,000 or 5 years -- this passed as well. Should have been changed in 2015 (or 2014) and 2020 (or 2019).

Just buy two gallons and the Lisle funnel and change the coolant. Plenty of articles on how to change and bleed the system here. The funnel is a great assist in both.

(Different subject but your brakes and clutch fluids may be even more out of date than the coolant on this low mileage car.)

Added: I would NOT assume the coolant in the car meets Honda specs since it's completely unknown. "OL999-9011 meets ASTM D-3306 and ASTM D-4340" which tells me a coolant meeting those two specifications will be OK.
