does anyone know what the valve looking thing on the firewall above the headers is called? I know it has coolant running through it, but not sure what it does, any help is appreciated.

krikke thanks for the help. i could deal with that as long as it doesn't affect the ac controls also, like blow hot and cold air when running the ac, I don't drive the car in winter anyways, so I rarely use the heat as it is.

That's a coolant air purge high point. You need it to purge ALL the air from the coolant system when you do a flush...if your heater doesn't get hot, you didn't get all the air out.
Has nothing to do with controlling the heater temp btw, lots of bad info above.

The valve does control coolant flow to the heater core. Air in the cooling system will cause overheating, and no heater /defrost operation.
Coolant flow to the heater core is shut off by the valve for AC operation.
