I have a 2001 with 85,000 miles. Should I be worried about the retainers? If so where should I buy new ones, how can I tell if mine are worn, and can I install them on my own?
Yes. Search the forums and see pictures of what to look for and how to fix it.

why should he be worried about his retainers if he never said he over-revved or anything?

I suppose the owner can take the chance that it was NEVER mechanically over revved at some point in the previous 85,000 miles.

But I think the risk (massive engine failure) outways the small cost to inspect and/or replace them.

YMMV

i agree.

but it sounds like you're saying, in general, one should be worried about retainer damage even if there is substantial confidence that an overrev never occurred.

just clarifying...but yes, if there is a possibility of over-rev, then one should worry about the retainers.

If by "substantial confidence", you mean "100%" - then that is likely OK.

IMO - I'd be worried about anything less than 100% confidence that it was never mechanically over revved, considering the amount of damage that will take place if a retainer fails.

Just pulled the cover and looked for recessed keepers.
I was just curious to see if replacing your valve stem seals during the process is a good idea?

Damn this is a good thread. Well, I've done a mech overrev on my AP1 about 4-5 times after I first bought it. That was about 30,000 miles ago. I'm gonna go to my first track day in October at Buttonwillow.

I'd like to inspect my retainers, or actually just look for the movement of the keepers like Billman250 said, but it's my daily driver, I've never done this before, and I'm afraid I won't be able to tell, or I'll screw something up and then not be able to drive it to work.

So...anyone wanna help? Maybe we can do a "group" inspection? I'm willing to go anywhere in SoCal.

There is absolutely no reason not to use TI retainers.

When you use quality springs with matching ti retainers they wont wear out.

if you slap brand a retainers on a stock spring or brand b springs then yes they will wear out.

Ti retainers that do wear, wear on the edges when they dont lock into the spring. If there is any movement between the spring and retainer they will wear.

If you have to take the stuff apart upgrade the springs and retainers. Stock stuff works ok, but aftermarket springs/retainers will save your motor in the event you over-rev it.

Hi folks,

I've posted this some days before, but perhaps not in the right section, I suppose (Anyone Good at Spotting Cracked Retainers? in Pacific Northwest S2000 Owners).

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago I had an overrev with my S2K. Shifted into 2nd instead of 4th at around 120kph (~74mph). At the moment the clutch was released I could still see 114kph on the speedo (~71mph). So I think the engine must have hit something between 9500 - 10000rpm for a split second.

After reading all the threads and posts about overrev I took the cover off to have a look at the retainers. As far as I can see, the most commonly found cracks go in a radial direction (i.e. in a direction from the center towards the outside) and are found on the base of the retainer (the section that surrounds the valve stem).

But has anyone seen these types of cracks? They are located on the outer edges of the retainers. I found them on both intake and exhaust side. About 8 retainers have them.

My S2000 is from 2005 and has the F20C engine. It has done just over 50k km's.

Should I be worried?

Mikegarrison already suggested that these cracks might be more material/production related then stress or fatigue.
