Default CRAZY oil dipstick

For some strange reason my oil dipstick has gone crazy. It is giving me a different level every time. Sometimes it is saying I am low and sometimes it reads high. Even different readings that are just seconds apart. What is happening?!?!?! I am freaking out. I don't want to starve or overfill my precious F20!

are you checking it at the same condition? hot or cold? normally you should have a cold reading, check it in the morning after the oil sits over night and then operation temp reading after you warm up your car and let car sit for 5-10 min so the oil can settle compare your readings!

Make sure you double dip, the reading on the first pull is almost always wrong. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it off and reinsert, then pull out and you will have the accurate reading by checking both sides of the dipstick and taking the lower of the two readings.

All of the comments listed above are spot on , follow all of the tips for an accurate reading. This is the worst car I've ever owned for dipstick readings, you have to check your oil frequently and you have to follow an exact method all of the time.

You need to wait longer or keep wiping and reading until it's consistent. This topic's a well-beaten dead horse.

Thanks for the advice. I have tried most of the suggestions posted, but I will just have to keep a close eye on things.

S2000 owner's manual instructs to check the oil with a hot engine. Allow engine to reach full temp, turn engine off, wait 3-5 minutes, check dipstick. Oil should be between the L and H doing this procedure.

Same here checked today while the car was cold.

First time it was low.
Second time almost full.
Third time it was on the middle?

Its just strange i got some Midland in the car atm, and it seems to burn very much of it.

I will change to castrol very, very soon.

Another thing I started doing is remove the dipstick standing in front of the engine (I used to do it on the side since I'm not very tall and it was easier). I'd get a lot of weird readings and would need 3-4 times to get something accurate because I was always rubbing it on the sides of the hole. I don't have this problem standing at the front now.

That is the same problem I am having. I just recently changed to Royal Purple and about a week and a half later it is reading either too low or too high. I hope I am not burning that much oil!
