Default Cruise Control not working

hi,

ever since i got the car i noticed the cruise control would not engage. i would press the button and the light is on but pressing SET at any speed does not do anything.

i didn't really care about it because let's face it.. most of the time i'm running and enjoying that lovely short throw 6 speed shifter instead of cruising but i'm looking at a 2500 mile trip next week and i know my right foot will get the worst of it!

any ideeas on things to check or what the common problems are? how bad can this damage my pocket?

thanks,

Cristian

Take that junk out, modify the bracket to just hold the coolant reservoir. Cleans up the engine bay a bit. Cable cruise control sucks anyway.

Sorry, don't know what else could be wrong.

When I was researching LED bulbs for the rear taillights of my Ap1 I came across a reference that the bulbs can cause the cruise control to malfunction. Is there any chance someone put in LED bulbs in the rear taillights ? Just a guess, the next thing I would check is to make sure the control unit is underhood, and that the cable is hooked up, it might be possible that a previous owner disconnected it to make room for underhood mods.

You are actually pushing the buttons on the wheel to engage it right?? not just the button on the left to turn it on?

make sure the cruise control module is plugged in, in the engine bay and also make sure you have the little white nub that presses a switch on the clutch(needed since when the switch is open it disables cruise control, like if your changing gears)

Way to answer the OPs question!

Recommending removing it to "clean up the engine bay".....why---to impress someone else in some parking lot?

OP--- all good suggestions from the other posters---also check the switch on the brake pedal as the cruise cuts off when you push on the brake.

i had my cruise stop working after i had the car for a few months. check the brake AND the clutch switch, if either are out a tiny bit they won't let cruise engage

thanks a lot to you all for your advices!

i checked and the unit is under the hood and connected. i opened the cover and the cable seems to work fine keeping the accelaration on when i pulled on it.

next stop under the dash i checked both clutch and brake sensors and they seem to be fine, fully pressed when both pedals are not engaged. i did have them both sorted out some time ago because the car would not start when the pedal stopper broke and the car would not recognize the clutch being pressed. also, the brake lights stopped working so that one was sorted out as well.
if i remember correctly even before those being touched the cruise control did not work (ever since i bought the car 5 months ago)

not sure what else i can check next?
is there a specific fuse i should be looking at? i read about the cruise control sharing a fuse with other things but did not quite get which one i should check.

also, does the "cruise control" light come on if it engages? in my case i press the button on the dash and the light on it is lit then i press SET on the wheel and nothing happens.

thanks!

it's a long shot but check fuse #6 to make sure it's good.....

here's a fuse box wiring diagram for reference-

hmm.. my fusebox doesn't look anything like it so it must be different for an AP2.
one thing i'm noticing is that the same fuse is for the cruise control main switch and the unit plus other things that are working fine in my car. if the main switch comes on when i press it that should mean the fuse is fine.

i've noticed there are some slots in the fusebox that are empty but i guess that's normal and those are not used right? could it be it's missing a few fuses?
i can buy some tomorrow and stick them in and see what happens.

would there be any chance of doing some damage by adding fuses where they're not supposed to be?
