Sorry it wasnt helpful.

On the fuse question, putting fuses in the empty slots won't hurt anything--- there's nothing there to connect to.

Isn't there also a vacuum hose related to cruise control? I had a vacuum leak on my prev. car that made me unable to use cruise control. Not sure if it applies to manuals though (prev was an auto)

i checked and the unit is under the hood and connected. i opened the cover and the cable seems to work fine keeping the accelaration on when i pulled on it.

next stop under the dash i checked both clutch and brake sensors and they seem to be fine, fully pressed when both pedals are not engaged. i did have them both sorted out some time ago because the car would not start when the pedal stopper broke and the car would not recognize the clutch being pressed. also, the brake lights stopped working so that one was sorted out as well.
if i remember correctly even before those being touched the cruise control did not work (ever since i bought the car 5 months ago)

not sure what else i can check next?
is there a specific fuse i should be looking at? i read about the cruise control sharing a fuse with other things but did not quite get which one i should check.

also, does the "cruise control" light come on if it engages? in my case i press the button on the dash and the light on it is lit then i press SET on the wheel and nothing happens.

thanks!

hmmmm well the switches are out of the mix.

in regards to your second question, pressing the CC button make the green LED turn on(even with out setting it). setting the CC causes the dash light (green) on the instrument panel to illuminate. if the button is illuminating you know its not the switch.

last place i would check is the steering wheel buttons themselves, maybe you have some loose connections, lack of contact, or corrosion that may have affected its operation. i always disconnect the battery when working around the steering wheel or any SRS sensors (pulling the stereo out) so i dont have an air bag go off in my face

the green light on the intrument panel never illuminates i guess because it does not engage so next stop i'm checking the buttons on the steering wheel. good point on disconnecting the battery!

i'll be back with the outcome.

well.. i eventually got around to checking the controls on the wheel, i took everything apart(not that there was much to take apart), cleaned it up a bit and put it back and still nothing. all connections and wires look ok and i didn't really see anything that might be wrong.

anyone have any ideas what i could check next?

just to recap:
when i press the button on the dash it stays lit but then pressing SET or any other button won't engage the cruise control and the light on the instrument pannel does not light either.

- i checked the cruise control unit under the hood, it's all there and seems fine. wired are all connected, pulling it by hand it seems to be moving the cable without effort.
- checked the brake and clutch pedals to make sure they don't stay pressed or the car thinks they are. all pedal stoppers are new and working fine.
- lastly i checked the controls on the wheel and everything looks good there too.

I'll have a look at it at the meet on Wednesday. If anything we can swap our units out on the tech day on the 1st of March if the issue isn't resolved by then.

I had the same issue where hitting the set button did nothing. I tested the steering wheel switches and they were registering fine. What actually worked for me was cleaning the wires connected to the grounding point under the hood on the driver's side near the headlight. It was all gunked up with dirt. Cleaned those and now it works, worth a try.
