Cruise control problem
This probably wouldn't bother most people, but 90% of my driving is late night long distance highway. Every time I either set or resume my cruise, the car accelerates to about 5mph faster than what I set to, then drops abruptly down to the set speed. It almost feels like its accelerating at WOT. This has only been happening for the last few months. Any suggestions?
Be sure your foot has steady pressure on the go pedal before engaging the cruise control. I've always found it to be smooth if you are settled at your chosen speed for a second or two. Mine likes to jump up about 1 mph above where I start. Nature of the beast, but 5 is a bit much.
Do you have a strut tower brace? Some get in the path of the cruise control cable, causing it to take a different route around the mounting bracket. I had to try mine in a couple different configurations to find the best.
BTW, we have the same odometer reading!

Check the cruise control cable. Pop the hood... it goes into a little black box in the front right side of the engine bay as you're standing looking at the car. Pop the cover off the box (it has 3 little clip tabs... no tools necessary). Make sure there's some slack in the cable. It adjusts the same way the throttle cable does. Not enough slack and you'll get the big surge you're talking about.
