Default CV Joint and Alignment

I know this is probably a stupid question, but I still don't quite understand the workings of CV joints and want to make sure I'm not going to have to pay for not asking a question later. From the searches I've done, I believe I have a bad cv joint housing and also need to get my alignment done. I'm planning on bringing in my car for the alignment, but want to make sure that if I need to have the cv joint housing or other parts of the axel assembly replaced, that the alignment won't be effected. Thanx in advance and any explination on how CV joints work would also be appreciated

Thanx,
Nick (Riceburner)

A CV joint is "kinda" like a ball and socket. It is designed so that power can be transmitted through it (like a universal joint but with much more range of motion and smoother) where the power needs to be "directed" at various angles other than straight through the drive shaft (or half shaft in this case).
And yes, generally, when a CV joint is changed, it is wise to do an alignment although not always necessary if the settings can be left undisturbed precisely.

Cool, thanx xviper. I guess I'll just have the dealer take a look at it overall and make a recommendation. Do you know how much it usually costs to replace a CV joint, or according to this board, it appears I just need the outer CV joint housing. Thanx again, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge

Sorry, I don't have any idea what an S2000 CV would cost in the U.S. Something you might consider is to check into the price of getting the complete half shaft assembly. This will make it easier to install and will give you peace of mind knowing the the other CV joint on the same shaft is new.

Thanx again guys. I am getting vibrations from the rear driver side wheel area upon acceleration. My car has about 60k miles on it and while I've only done a few clutch drops, from what I've read it's reasonable that the CV joint needs replacing. The vibrations stop when I pull in the clutch and it is speed INdependent. It isn't completely consistent as I can sometimes get the car not to make the vibrations but it seems to be kind of by chance. I never run the car hard any more since the problem began. I also have a seperate vibration occuring around 70-80 mph. I was thinking that this was a balance problem, but have had 2 places balance the tires and they both said they were fine. I think I'll have them balance it one more time when I bring it in on Friday for Honda to look at this other vibration. Any thought or comments would be great. Again, thanx for all the expert advice!!!!!!

Nick, it's the inboard CV not the outboard (outside cup of the inboard CV).
