Default which cylinder is number 1

I've searched and can't find the answer.
Is it the firewall end or the front of the car end?

Thanks

Usually the "free" (EG non-driving) end of an engine is regarded as the front and the cylinder at that end numbered 1. If a V then the left bank cylinder (I think).

In short, on a S, the one nearest the radiator.

Cylinder number one is always the one closest to the timing belt/chain.
