do i really need to pull the whole column or can i get away with just taking the steering wheel off?

Dash removal sucks!!. I almost gave up on my s2k after a fail attemp. As far as I remember the steering wheel have to come off, for a easier job. Just wonder, what kind of a project are you planing?

Not only steering wheel have to be removed, but also steering column too.

 

No, the steering column doesn't have to be removed. And it's not such a pity. I've done it by myself and wrapped it with Alcantara.
2 Bolts on both sides, 2 Bolts on the center console, some Bolts behind the radio door, a fix below the passenger airbag (which has to be removed) - that's it.

 

so i can get away with removing just the steering wheel? nice.
