Default Decision Time

Just after I hit 100,000 miles on my AP1 while running the dragon, I'm getting a noise from the transmission. From my mechanic, he checked everything over and belives it's the bearings in the transmission.

I have a few choices:
1) Rebuild,
2) Replace,
3) Replace with an AP2 transmission.

1) Anyone know of a GOOD transmission shop near Greenville,SC or Charlotte, NC that knows the Honda transmissions ? ( I won't return to my Honda Dealer )

2) If I find a good, used transmission, my mechanic can do this swap - anyone have one laying around ?

3) I know people who have swapped their AP! for an AP2 transmission - curious as to what the benefit is ??

It would be cheaper to replace than to rebuild.

the AP2 tranny has better syncros, slightly shorter 1-4 gears and a slightly taller 6th gear. Might as well upgrade.

1-4 gears are the same ratios in AP1 and AP2. Only 5th, 6th and the gear reduction ratios are different.

Could be the trow-out or the clutch. The output shaft bearings are pretty crappy too.

I never heard of a S2000 transmission failing except when they had no oil in it. Something else could be wrong. I'd recommend replacing the oil as a first action. Several S200 owners here, some w/ over 200K miles and no issues w/ the drivetrain.

I've always changed the transmission fluid when I do the oil changes. This transmission fluid only had about 2,500 miles on it. All it's life it's only had the Honda transmission fluid.

The sound is almost like an engine knock, and it totally disappears under deceleration. Clutch in = no noise, clutch out it's there when just tapping the gas a little, and always while under accelerating, even moderately. I can also feel the knock slightly in the shifter.

When we emptied the transmission fluid today, it was still nice and clear, but there seemed to be a large amount of fine silver particles in the oil. We cleaned the pan before draining, so it wasn't something that was there already.

If you don't think this is the transmission, I'm open to other suggestions or things to check.

Glitter in the oil means tranny is dead. Good luck with your rebuild or replace.

By the way, changing the oil in a manual trans every 2500 miles is a bit excessive. Probably no need to change more often than every 25000 miles unless you are tracking the car.

You can get a used one for under 1k. Check craigslist and post a WTB add here in the forums.

Run a trans low on oil and you'll take out the secondary reduction shaft bearings.
