Why didn't you just jump start (push start) the car?

my battery died today and someone was nice enough to jump me. i hooked up my end, after they did theirs, i got in the car and no lights, no nothing, which freaked me out. i got out, my connections are good, i check his and they were reversed! so i quickly changed them, the cables were so hot they were melting, but i switched them and got back in my car to start it and it started fine. of course i was pissed but how mad can you get at someone stopping to help? anyways the car seems 100% i did a little bit of searching and read about batteries exploding and electrical systems fried, but it seems like i lucked out, but im wondering if there is anything i need to double check to make sure everything is ok instead of driving around thinking everything is ok until something goes wrong. thanks for the help!
Don't sweat it. You should have already noticed if you fried something.

If your car started you got lucky and didn't blow the main 100A fuse to the battery.

Just for future reference - the correct way to jump start a car is not to hook one end up and then the other...

The correct steps:

1) connect positive on one car
2) connect positive on the other car
3) connect negative on good battery
4) connect negative to car ground (unpainted metal) on car with dead battery (to avoid sparks when connected - but I usually just connect it to the battery terminal since a good ground point can be hard to find)

I *never* will let a person connect either end for me. I will connect it, thank you very much. I don't need a battery exploding in my face...

very lucky.

push-start = push your car and pop it into gear- start the car.

Obvious but make sure your key is in position II "ON" when doing this or your car won't start.

the car ran fine because your alternator was powering the car once it was started. i bet the battery was toasted though, so its a good thing you replaced it.
