How much play should there be at the joint between the diff and the axles? I have some and was wondering if that was a sign of bad things.

There is none on the wheel end.

From under the car I can push up on the axle at the diff end and it will raise and lower itself by a fair amount, probably more than 1/16" but less than 1/8". I was not in a place to allow me to measure it, but I can tonight.

It freaked me out since I wasn't expecting to be able to feel any. The car is an '02 with 55k on it.

I posted this question weeks ago and got no response.

I have play in my drive axles also. Aside from the rotational play, there is also some play when I try and move an axle along its length. I notice more play on my passenger side axle which is why I was asking what is the maximum acceptable amount of play.

Maybe we'll get answers this time.

 

just get it checked it before you spend $$, but i do have some axles in good condition if you need some, good luck with it

 

I have more play in the passenger side as well, but I didn't notice any rotational play.

sandiegos2k I did have it checked, that's when we found the play so do you know if that is normal and how much play is acceptable?
