Default Differential Failure

as you all probably know from my previous post my diff has been whining for a while so i brought down the use of my car to only special occassions

so on valentine's night I decided to take out my car, drove fine all along until I was going home. (luckily I had dropped off my date back home just on time)

While cruising around 70 MPH I heard a loud POW back at my rear end so I decided to pull over.

The car drove fine and all for another 1/16 of a mile. but when I checked under there was a puddle of Diff fluid, didnt know where it was coming from exactly then. Well ended up being stuck from 2am sunday AM till 8:30am thanks to great ALLSATE Road emergency service. They truly suck.

I checked the car today and the fluid is leaking out of the drivers side housing where the axle pops into the diff. Obviosuly the oil seal is gone.

My question is to those that have already replaced their diff, we know that the oil seal is gone and that my rear is whining, but the fact that its gone is this the typical bearing cap failure that caused the oil seal to go? I do notice a little more play in the driver's side axle.

This is absolutely 100-fricking-% how my differential went.

Absolutely the same way.

It sound like the left side cap is broken, and the carrier is moving around. The seal hasn't gone bad., It cant work as a seal when the axle is moving around in the carrier. Most like ly going to cost you a new housing, gears and bearings. You should be able to clean the differential out and reuse it.

If that is the only difference, why wouldn't Comptech sell the straps by themselves?

The caps have to be machined to clear the new straps

Maybe, maybe not. It's not normal for the axle to be loose in the carrier. Something is broken internally
