Is there any hypothesis on why these would fail? Does it happen at all on un-modded cars or under normal power levels?

The theory is the left cap flexes under load, then breaks. The differential/ring gear are constantly being "pushed" towards the left side cap, beacuse of the direction change.

Of course, when the cap flexes the backlash and preload changes, and the gear destoys itself. There have been plenty of NA cars with broken diffs.

funny you should ask this. I just ask this same question to CompTech on Wenesday. Here is what I was told..

Thay machine the stock caps down to give a smoother surface for the reinforcement to seat against.

I ask this as a follow up.. Why can't you just take the OEM caps and rework them? I meed this would same on shipping, etc..

Becasue the bore of the housing is like that of a motor. Both the saddles and caps are bored when the unit is together. This means if the caps were seperated from the housing they were bored with, they would not fit another housing properly.

I don't think a CompTech housing has failed in the field yet. Wesmaster was one of the first to have one, and it is still on his car.

If you jack the rear of the car up, put the parking brake on with the car in neutral, then try turning the driveshaft hard in each direction, you might be able to see a half shaft moves around or makes a noise.
