Differential Fluid Change
I guess if you are not sure how to jack a car up then you shouldnt be wrenching or risking your life. Going to a quiklube shop seems to give up everything we work hard to do ourselves (and risk driving the car!). Surely getting a car near level is not the hardest thing in the world to do.
Hey guys, I'm getting a little bit of diff whine so I'm going to do this fluid change when I get home from work this afternoon and see if it makes any difference. Being in Aus, I cant get a hold of all the oils you guys use over in the states but I have come across this product at the shops here...
http://www.nulon.com.au/products/SAE_90_Li...fferential_Oil/
Its a straight SAE90 GL5 gear oil which is what the service book recommends. The only thing that has me a little confused is the section in the product information that talks about friction modifiers. I know its not needed in our Torsen type diffs due to lack of clutches in the diff, but can anyone confirm if using this will damage the diff in anyway ? All my research so far suggests it will just have no effect. The sales man at the store told me I may be better off not using synthetic oil like mobile 1 as its a bit thinner overall and may make the diff whine even more. What do you guys think of using a straight 90 mineral oil or can you recommend something else to make the diff quiter ?
Thanks

how so, they both have the same starting viscosity, or is that another old wives tale?
Nowadays, 110W is closer to the original spec'd 90W.

pilotb777_300,
Good luck with that Nulon straight 90. I'm not familiar with it ... but it touts itself as a domestic Australian product so that's to be expected.
Given that it is no thicker at temp than a 75W-90 or 80W-90, it may not quiet down your diffy.
For rear-ends that are already exhibiting some howl (wear) I'd go a lot thicker ... and perhaps with a suspended solid like molybdenum disulphide. One that comes to mind is Red Line Shockproof:

I've spoken with car luvvin' Aussies before ... and Red Line is available down under ... although it is frightfully expensive. Thankfully, you only need one quart. I'd be tempted to try the lightweight (middle) viscosity first and the heavyweight as a last resort.

Thanks for the response guys. I did my diff oil change today and let me tell u the old oil almost came out as mud! it was black sludge almost. On the plus side there wasnt much metal o the magnet drain bolt but for oil thats only been in there 8000 km it sure is dirty! anyways like you guys suggested the 90 weight oil did nothing to fix my whine problem
i think it wines more than b4 now! i guess Im going to be trying another diff oil soon or just accept the whine is always going to be there. Anyone got any suggestions? maybe a 110 or a 140 grade oilmight help although Will something so thick damage the diff long term? thanks again for all the replies. At least i know this nulon stuff in there mow won't damage the diff

Just did my diff yesterday, mine was black too! Smooth as a button now. Question is, what if you dont tourqe the fill bolt to spec? I didn't have the rigth wrench size seeing as my socket didn't clear the rear suspension. Will i lose my diff if its 1/8th turn from spec?
