Question Differential Problem=(

Well..i was driving...and i know its bad to launch your car and bog which puts the strain on your diff... But today iw as driving...and i was around 15MPH then I just floored it. Vtec kicked in then when I shift to 2nd I just felt this incredible jerk and hearing this loud thud clunking noise. So I pulled over and in neutral when I push the car it makes that noise. Then I got back inside and try to move it in 1st but then its just this very hard jerk everytime it clunks n loud thud noise from my rear end. So pretty much blown differential right? Well my question is, I dont know much about the lsd and the gearing inside but I been looking on s2ki and reading about diff and all that for about 2 years now. Question is
(1)what is broken inside? It jus thappened earlier.
(2)Is it just the ring and pinion I have to replace?
(3)Or everything else like lsd and casing.
I'm going to lift my car up tomorrow and drop the diff and go find the KIA 4.77 Gear I read about some member's write up. Btw. I been searching everywhere and the questions I have I could not find the answer to. Thanks to all.
(4) What else do I need besides the Kia 4.77 gear set? Any kits to install?

ps. I'm sad because I'm a high school student going to school 12 hrs a day and only working 3 days a week at round tables...But I can say I'm Happy ass HECK because now i have a reason to join the geared club!

Yes, sounds like you need a new diff. 3K dealer list + labor or whatever you can buy a used on for + labor.

Also you work at "Round Table" pizza not round tables.

Personally...I'd highly recommend using Hardtop Guy's gear install service and go with the Richmond 4.77 (if that is the final drive you want). They will be much stronger than the Kia's unless you spend more money to have the gears cryro'ed.

HTG's guy can rebuild what ever is wrong with your diff while installing the new gears.

I'm just curious...

how loud was your "thunk" noise? are you still able to run the car now?

I am still trying to figure out if my diff is blown, I heard a loud thunk/clud noise (almost as if it were metal on metal) while I was cruising on the highway. The car has never made that noise ever again and it seems to run fine..

Is this the answer?

So I pulled over and in neutral when I push the car it makes that noise. Then I got back inside and try to move it in 1st but ....
Even if you can drive it: DO NOT!
Whatever broke in your diff may move around and do more damage to bearings or Torsen unit.

Getting a KIA final drive - new or used - is easy.
Getting it properly installed is ... not.
It's not rocket science, but you DO need the proper tools for it.
And some wrenching experience.
Btw.. installing used gears again in another housing is not the best thing.
Gear sets are a set and the housing is part of the set - after a while.
Expect more noise from a used gear set.

Btw.. Richmond makes 4.56's
The perfect compromise, IOW best drivability IMO.

If your diff is broken, what kind of noise would it make? Is it loud? I have searched this before but have never really found a straight answer.

At low speeds I can hear sort of a "card in bike spokes" sound, but it is very faint and could very well be my mind playing tricks on me after reading all of these posts.

I have never launched my car, and when I heard the sound I was just cruising... but I did buy the car used a little over 2 months ago so I have no idea how the previous owner handled the car.

The noise is LOUD and can be felt big time. You know that feeling when you're in first gear, and its like just jerking ever so crazy. It's like that but you can feel it from the rear end. Like something is hitting and causing you to jerk bad like holding you back from moving forward. Scary. Luckily enough Tuleberg was right by me when that happened.
