Default Differential Removal

I have search and havent found anything. I remove the bar, and then the bolts that hold the differential. Total of 8 screws that holds it? Now I am stuck.

Do i have to remove the axles?

can I drop everything just from the bottom?

pix would be appreciated.

by 8 "screws" i assume u mean the 4 bolts in front and 4 nuts in the rear?

After that, separate the half shafts on each side of the diff (looks like a star), which i think uses a 12 or 14 mm bolt and nut (6 on each side). Then removed the cotter pin and castle nut that hold in the lower ball joint (17mm i think). Its where the knuckle/ spindle assembly meets the lower control arm. the ball joint will be stuck in there pretty good. Use a hammer and tap the lower control arm from the top (you'll notice a little flat spot on the control arm for this specific purpose) with progressive force until the joint pops out. That will give u room to slide the half shafts out an away from the diff. The diff will not just fall down. its wedged in there pretty good. Try sliding the diff as far forward as possible and let it down.

Dont forget to check your toque specs on reassebly, especially on the castle nut. gl, have fun.

you do nut have to remove the c/v shafts to get the diff out..... get the diff loose and support it with a jack now slide it forward out of the rear mounts, at this point you may have to loosen the EVAP canister (Black Box) and push it to the side. I slid the diff and jack as far over to the driver side as i can and then you can pull the shaft out of the diff enough to clear the post that sticks out. once its out the driver side is cake, and when you go back together its the exact oppisite ( driver side first and then pass side)

did mine the first time and only took about 2 hours total

Your diveshaft ( from the trans ) Bolts are 6mm allen, i used a stubby 1/4 drive 6mm allen socket and didn't strip one head

be sure you loosen all the shaft bolts ( C/V and drive shaft ) Befor you loosen the diff housing bolts

yea I loosend the housing bolts first and now its hard getting the allen and c/v bolts off.

thanks for the tip about sliding the diff... I thought I had to take the whole axle assembly off ( i had to replace my drivers axle and removing the ball joints was a pain)

thanks a lot guys

Its super easy.

Just take the nut off the ball joint.

You just hammer the spot where the ball joint sits (the SLOT AROUND IT) .. not the actual ball joint part. It will pop up.

Then you just slide it out and you can move the rear assembly sideways along with axle. (Wayyy easier to put back together)

I have tried with and without removing axles.

I removed the diff without touching the rotor assemblies but had to take off the ball joints on each side just to get the diff back in.

Removal 3 hrs.. Installation less than 30 mins with popping ball joints out.
