For the axle inner cv's, everyone seems to use cv-2, and haven't reported issues. So apparently it works. But technically its not the correct spec for the task.

Its a tripod bearing, and correct grease is nlgi#1. Redline cv-2 is an nlgi#2. Most cv grease are nlgi#2. Its difficult to find an nlgi#1. Most likely need to buy online.

Or just use redline like everyone else.

Mobilux EP1 is an NLGI1 grease, could be good for the inner joints. $15/lb shipped. It's only good for up to 130c or 260f so maybe it wouldn't work, I have no clue how hot the inner joints get.

Schaffer's #274 is also NLGI1 and has a higher temperature tolerance, so that may be a better option.

Although still available on ebay, it's interesting it was discontinued. New Hondas still have CVs, obviously, so I wonder what the current factory lube is.

Our inner cv use tripod bearings. This is what requires nlgi#1.

Traditional cv can and should use 'cv' grease, which are nlgi#2, such as the appropriately named redline cv-2. The propshaft cv are not tripod, so ues, cv-2 is appropriate spec.

Tripod is a three pronged 'wheel', each prong having a bearing. These bearings transmit the torque from the axle cup to the axle shaft. They only spin when the suspension moves up and down.

These bearings are what require the nlgi#1 grease.

The pitting is caused by the outer race colliding with the cup, so its tricky, on the one hand you want extreme pressure additives but you also don't want to starve the rollers. For the prop shaft CV you want EP additives because you're just protecting the steel balls in the cage. NLGI2 is fine there because the balls don't move much. Same with the outer driveshaft joint.

When you order a new joint from Honda you get a packet of this grease included. Each tube is exactly enough to repack the inner joint.
